Networking Tips

Posted by: Daniele   on January 30, 2010 at 1:30 am

The idea of walking up to strangers at a conference and striking up conversation can be intimidating. Fortunately, the PodCamp community is friendly and supportive! I have some tricks I’ve picked up over the years on overcoming shyness and breaking the ice that I’d like to share.

1. Think “I can do it”
Positive thinking drives you to achieve your goals. Negative thinking stops you from trying new things.  Since PodCamp Toronto is all about learning and trying new things, don’t stifle yourself, think positively at the very beginning!

2. We all share something(s) in common
“Hi… <insert item in common>” is a great motivator for overcoming initial shyness. Not that I use canned material, but these ice breakers come in handy for me at tech events:

  • is this your first time attending PodCamp Toronto?
  • do you produce a podcast?
  • (gesturing towards the iPhone in their hand) what are your favourite iPhone apps?
  • (gesturing towards the moleskine in

Community Mapping Project

Posted by: John Leschinski   on January 28, 2010 at 9:37 am

On our Venue page, and above this paragraph, there is a map. A map of the area around Ryerson’s Rogers Communications Centre, where PodCamp Toronto is being held this year. This map is appropriately named the “Area Map”, pretty genius right?

But this map is incomplete, and we need your help. This is a collaborative mapping effort to highlight some of the restaurants, hotels, and bars in the area. So if you know the area, live nearby, or have a passing familiarity with some of the local haunts we’d love to know. It’s not too difficult to add your favorite places to our map either, but I’ve written a brief tutorial just in case.

Venture over to the map on Google maps.

Click on the edit button in the upper right hand of the menu pane to start editing the map. The page will then change state and you’ll …

Volunteer Update: PodCamp Toronto 2010

Posted by: Leona Hobbs   on January 26, 2010 at 9:12 am

Thanks to the wonderful folks who have already signed up to volunteer! It is no surprise that there are such cool people in the awesome community around PodCamp Toronto. These people have offered to lend a hand to helping out on Feb. 20 and 21.

If you can spare a morning or afternoon one of the days of the event  and would like to pitch in, please fill out this short form and we’ll be in touch.

My co-leader for the mustering of the volunteers is Heather Leson. Heather works at Tucows by day and lends leadership to a number of community causes, including Crisis Camp, in her time outside work. She’s got a knack for events and keeping things organized. We’re lucky to have her.

I’m thrilled to be working as a PodCamp volunteer again this year. My company, Social Media Group, is the …

Sessions Sign Up in Full Swing

Posted by: John Leschinski   on January 20, 2010 at 9:01 am

Anyone can register a session and present at PodCamp Toronto; unlike regular conferences where the organizers select the speakers and topics, here everyone is a rock star. In little over a day since we flipped the switch on sessions registration we’ve gotten nineteen rock stars signed up to present on the big day. So I figured I’d throw together a quick list of seven questions you might have about what to do once you’ve submitted your session. Check them out below and if you have any other questions about sessions or signing up leave them in the comments below.

By the way big thanks to Bill Deys at CastRoller for helping us get it ready behind the scenes.

How do I get a fancy avatar?

Well little partner, you need a fancy picture to start with. When you have that picture you can go to the account page and …

Tickets, Please! How we chose our registration application

Posted by: Tommy Vallier   on January 17, 2010 at 10:34 pm

So… I signed in to take a look at the guest registrations this morning and we’re already over 350. Three hundred and fifty. That’s about half what we estimated arrived for PodCamp last year. Three hundred and fifty people. That freaking rocks. And all of this was following  a “soft launch” - we never tweeted the site was live and registrations were open - you did. And then you spread it. As one of the people monitoring registrations, I thought I’d take a minute to explain why we went with Guestlist.

Back in the fall when the organizing team started planing this year’s event, one of the earliest decisions we made was to cut the PB wiki - at least from the registration perspective. While PB Wiki (Now PBWorks) has been wonderful to us since the first event in 2006, registrations done via wiki got way too complex last …

PodCamp Toronto 2010 Podcast, Episode 2

Posted by: John Meadows   on January 16, 2010 at 7:51 am

On today’s episode, two great conversations.

First, I speak with fellow organizing committee member Mike Dodd about the preparations for PodCamp Toronto 2010, and the great vibe people can expect.

Next, I speak with fellow PodCamp Toronto organizing committee members, Connie Crosby and Eden Spodek. Together, they produce the Community Divas podcast.

We talk about the foundational aspect of PodCamp Toronto: all attendees are invited to present. You won’t need to write a proposal. In fact, the soon-to-be-launched speaking schedule will be blank! All you will need to do is find an available time slot and fill in the details about your session.

In the meantime, what would you like to present?
